WOMEX, de internationale organisatie achter de grote jaarlijkse
wereldmuziekbeurzen, keert dit jaar twee WOMEX-awards uit, een voor een
artiest en een voor een educatieve instelling. Die voor de artiest
wordt komende week bekend, die voor de educatieve instelling is
vandeweek uitgereikt aan de Folkmuziekafdeling van de Sibelius Academy
in Helsinki.
WOMEX roemt het belang van de Sibelius Academy. Niet alleen vanwege de hoge kwaliteit aan traditionele én avantgardistische folkmusici die de academie in Finland aflevert, maar ook door de internationale uitstraling. In tal van landen ontstaan folkopleidingen de geschoeid zijn op de Sibelius-leest.
In zijn persbericht citeert WOMEX een van de vroege Sibelius-leerlingen, de inmiddels wereldwijd bekende Finse folkaccordeoniste Maria Kalaniemi. In het wereldmuziekmagazine Songlines onderstreept zij het belang van de academie: "Without the Folk department of the Sibelius Academy, there would be nothing like the folk scene there is in Finland. It's amazing the way it has allowed so many flowers to bloom." Ook laat WOMEX Art Järvelä aan het woord. Deze violist van de groep JPP en leider van tal van andere projecten zegt ondermeer: "The Sibelius Academy has given Finnish folk musicians a chance to be full-time folk musicians."
De Sibelius Academie bestaat al vanaf 1882. Maar pas sinds 1983 heeft het een aparte afdeling die zich richt op onderwijs in folkmuziek. Grote bezieler achter die stap was kantele-speler Martti Pokela. Tegenwoordig speelt professor Heikki Laitinen een inspirerende rol. Arto Järvelä over Laitinen: "He is the soul of what happened." Laitinen was al begin jaren zeventig actief als folkmuzikant. Op de Sibelius-academie heeft hij zich met name de laatste jaren gericht op het belang van improvisatie in de muziek, naast de uitvoering van traditionele muziek. Tegen Songlines verwoordde hij dat als volgt: "I started with essentially just two ideas. To perform the very oldest Finnish music in the most traditional way, and to be avant-garde and use the music in a new and crazy way."
De professor treedt hierover meer in detail tegenover student Juniper Hill die Laitinen interviewde voor zijn afstudeerscriptie: "One extremely important task of the department is to perform/present Finnish music history, which partly includes that which has already disappeared. And then that includes those instruments which are nowadays only in museums, those playing styles and singing styles that are no longer heard except in archives. That Finns have a right and a possibility to hear those also. That is one of the department's tasks, though not its only one." (...) "There cannot be any borders or limits, rather the folk musician must be just as free as the jazz musician and classical musician. A classical composer is allowed to do anything whatsoever, no limits at all. Same with a free jazz musician who can do anything whatever, no limits at all. It must be the same way in folk music also."
Martti Pokela en Heikki Laitinen omringden zich met puike leerkrachten/folkmusici als Timo Alakotila, Mauno Järvelä, Petri Hakala en Wimme Saari. In hun folkafdeling van de Sybelius Academie hebben ze heel divers folktalent opgeleid. Om wat namen te noemen: Maria Kalaniemi, Kimmo Pohjonen, Sväng, Jouhiorkesteri, Arto Järvelä, Timo Väänänen, Markku Lepistö, Susan Aho, Tellu Turkka, Jenny Wilhelms en vele anderen.
De Sibelius Academie ontvangt de WOMEX-award ook vanwege zijn stimulerende rol bij de ontwikkeling van gelijksoortige initiatieven in andere landen. Zo werken al heel wat conservatoria en muziekacademies volgens de Sibelius-formule. Je vindt ze in het Deense Odense, in Estland, in Stockholm, in Newcastle, in Oslo, in Tanzania en India. En sinds kort bijvoorbeeld ook in de universiteit van het Ierse Limerick waar docenten Sandra Joyce en Niall Keegan na intensief overleg met de Finnen zijn gekomen tot een eigen onderwijs-programma gericht op Ierse traditionele muziek.
